Visual Remedies: Bio Art projectImmediately prior to this project, I was looking into research involving the medicinal properties of aloe vera. At the time there was little conclusive research done to validate the common uses for aloe vera, such as a moisturizer or a soothing substance for sunburn. In fact, there was evidence that aloe vera could possibly be detrimental if put on a sunburn. I also found intrest in the value society places on DNA as a definitive fact but also how easy it is to obtain, and yet sometimes without benefit. For the project, I did a simple DNA extraction that can be performed at home, from three different species of aloe, including one aloe vera plant. I then displayed the DNA both with the plants and with images of the plants to start a conversation about what DNA is and what it can tell us, and with the title how can we construct an idea of science without thoroughly studying something.
